Zeng and Lu swaddle themselves in coats and hats and take a quick tour of the grounds. Just through the gates of the cemetery is a large, somewhat industrial-looking columbarium—a mausoleum where ash urns are stored in tiny niches. Zeng shows Lu Mother Yang’s final resting place.

“I can free up this space next to Mrs. Yang and place Yang Fenfang right beside her,” Zeng offers.

“That would be wonderful, Mr. Zeng.”

They climb the hill to the pagoda-like building.

“This is our second columbarium,” Zeng says. “As you can see, it sits on a rise, with a wide-open view and plenty of sunlight. In the summer and spring, a small grove at the rear of the columbarium provides a burst of green. This site has very good feng shui.”

“Must be quite a bit more expensive than the columbarium below.”

“Yes. Unfortunately, the price I quoted you for Yang Fenfang is not enough for her ashes to be placed here.”

“That’s all right. I think she’d prefer to be next to her mother.”

Zeng takes Lu into a large eight-sided room. There is a table in the center with an arrangement of flowers, fruit, and incense. The walls are honeycombed with elegantly appointed niches trimmed in red lacquer and gold foil. A set of stairs set flush into a side wall leads upward.

“What’s above?” Lu asks.

“Another two levels holding urns. From the outside, it looks as if the pagoda has seven floors, but floors four through seven are actually just for show.”

Zeng escorts Lu down the hill and through the cemetery gates to the parking lot, where they part ways.

“Thanks for your time, Mr. Zeng,” Lu says. “I’ll transfer a down payment later today so you can collect the body as soon as possible.”

Zeng gives Lu a formal bow. “Thank you for entrusting Yang Fenfang to me. I will take excellent care of her.”
